Collective Noun

A Collective Noun refers to a group of people, animals, or things spoken of as one unit. It represents the collection as a single entity, even though it includes multiple individuals. For example, “team” means a group of players, but we treat it as one unit.

  • It is usually singular in form but plural in meaning. We often use collective nouns when referring to committees, families, or sets.
  • In some cases, the verb used with a collective noun depends on whether we view the group as a unit or as individuals (e.g., The team is winning vs. The team are arguing).
  • Common examples include jury, class, herd, army, bunch, flock, bouquet, audience, etc.
